/August 24th is known as Vesuvius Day. On this date in 79 A.D. Mount Vesuvius erupted - historically known as one of THE largest volcanic explosions to ever occur.
Facts about Vesuvius:
1. It destroyed the cities of Pompeii, Herculeum, and Stabiae.
2. The volcano is located along the Gulf of Naples.
3. Vesuvius last erupted in March 1944.
4. The elevation is 4203 feet. When you visit Vesuvius, the bus takes you to 3280 feet...and you are able to climb approximately 650 feet in elevation to get to the top.
5. Mount Vesuvius is considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world.
