Top 5 Reasons to Visit Alcatraz When Visiting San Francisco

The first time George and I visited San Francisco, we did not have enough time to visit Alcatraz. Therefore, I made sure we were able to squeeze it into this trip. And man, I am so thankful we did. It exceeded all of our expectations!

Here are our top five reasons why you should visit Alcatraz:

1. It is part of the National Park system.

It became part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area in 1972. Alcatraz became a historical landmark in 1973, which was the year it was opened to the public. We love trying to visit National Parks when we are travelling, often taking extended road trips to get to the destinations! The parks are an important part of our country!

2. Boat ride in San Francisco Bay

In order to get to Alcatraz, you have to catch a boat ride from Pier 33 in San Francisco. You can purchase tickets through Alcatraz Cruises

The cost is approximately $42 per person, and it includes the following:
- Round-trip ferry service to Alcatraz Island
- Admission to the Alcatraz Cellhouse
- “Doing Time": The Alcatraz Cellhouse Tour (Cellhouse Audio Tour.)

Food and drink are not allowed to be brought on the ferry, but you can purchase a variety of snacks, sandwiches, and drinks on board!

3. Great Audio Tour

The audio tour that is provided is one of the best that we have experienced in all of our travels. It is thorough, informative, and entertaining.

4. Great views

The views from both the boat and the island are phenomenal! You could not ask for better sightseeing. You get views of Alcatraz during the boat ride over. While at Alcatraz, you have stunning views of the San Francisco skyline AND the Golden Gate Bridge!

5. Walking the corridors of history

While touring Alcatraz, you get to see firsthand the cells of notorious criminals like Scarface and Birdman. But more than that, you learn the history of it being a harbor defense port and a military prison prior to it becoming a prison for the criminals who broke the rules in other prisons. You also get to learn about the American Indian Occupation, which occurred during the 1970's!

This place is filled with history and should be a part of your trip to San Francisco! Don't miss it!!
